Fuses protect wiring the same way breakers do. When too much current flows, the fuse blows and the power stops. The difference is that a fuse has to be replaced every time, and older fuse boxes were built for homes that ran far less than a modern kitchen, central AC, and a home office.
We still see plenty of fuse boxes in older Bakersfield neighborhoods. Some are in fair shape. Others have been patched for decades with oversized fuses, penny tricks, and add on wiring. Our job is to tell you honestly which one you have.
Why fuses keep blowing
A fuse that blows over and over is a warning, not just a nuisance. Common causes include:
- Too many appliances on one circuit, especially heaters, AC units, and kitchen gear
- A short circuit in a cord, device, or old wiring
- Loose or corroded fuse holders that heat up
- The wrong size fuse for the wire it protects
The danger of the wrong fuse
The most common problem we find is a fuse that is too big for the wire. Someone got tired of a 15 amp fuse blowing and put in a 20 or 30. Now the fuse no longer protects the wire, and the wire can overheat inside the walls before anything shuts off.
We check fuse sizes against the wiring, tighten or replace damaged holders, and can install tamper resistant fuse adapters so the wrong size cannot go back in.
Repair the fuse box or replace it?
If the fuse box is in good condition and the house load is modest, a repair and the right fuses may be all you need. If the box is overheating, there is no room for new circuits, or you are adding an EV charger, AC, or a remodel, a panel upgrade is usually the safer long term move.
Some insurance companies and buyers also ask about fuse boxes during a sale or policy renewal. We can inspect the system and give you a written picture of what is there so you can make the call.
What to do right now
Keep spare fuses of the correct size on hand, and never replace a fuse with a larger one. If a fuse blows the moment you replace it, or you smell something hot near the box, stop and call. We answer 24/7.
